27th January 2008
Chesham Rangers 2 GX & Fulmer 4
After several weeks of postponed matches due to the heavy rainfall we experienced in early January, the players were keen to get a game on what was a very pleasant sunny morning in Old Amersham. They were playing top of the table Chesham Rangers on their home pitch. A difficult game was expected.
GX & Fulmer started well, but against the run of play, a Chesham Rangers forward broke away and put a looping high ball into the net that any keeper would have found hard to save. We were 1-0 down. New signing Steve D (who’s style I would liken to Wayne Rooney) was not prepared to let it stand at that score and soon after slotted into the net to bring it back to 1-1. GX & Fulmer kept pressing forward and in a busy penalty area, James Mc smacked the ball into the back of the net to put us into the lead. This was a situation that GX & Fulmer had not found themselves in often this season. There were many more chances towards the end of the first half. Charlie R came on for the last five minutes and was unlucky not to score from a run down the wing. More chances ensued, a goal mouth scramble, a post hit. The whistle was blown for half time and 2-1 didn’t seem enough considering the domination that we had had for long periods of the first half.
The second half started like the first half had finshed with more chances. James Mc attempting to emulate Cheshams only goal with a looping shot from 30 yards out. The team continued to press forward. Mazy runs by Parus, Charlie K putting crosses in, Tom I and Lewis Mac repeatedly getting the ball up to the front men, Tom H fighting for every ball, George keeping the defence solid. Steve almost scoring his second and then against the run of play Chesham equalised to make it 2-2. We’d lost leads before and not been able to come back. Which way would it go? GX & Fulmer continued to push forward and suddenly Steve put us back in the lead. This was nail biting stuff. We needed this win. Charlie R returned to pitch and took another run down the wing and slotted the ball home to make it 4-2. The away supporters could relax. A win was in sight. The ref blew for full time and GX & Fulmer could celebrate their first win of 2008 and only their second of the season. Let’s see if we can capitalise on this with another win next week away at Prestwood.
30th March 2008
Acorn Raiders 0 GX & Fulmer 9
Two games to go and two wins needed to stay in the Third Division. This week it was Acorn Raiders away, recently the subject of a bad tempered draw at home. With a very strong squad of 13 players and the sun shining, it looked as if we would be well placed to start our run in with a win – and we were not to be disappointed.
After a scrappy first five minutes GX started to press on the Raiders goal. At 7 minutes James pushed a long ball through the mid-field and found a neat touch from Ollie onto Parus on the left side who made no mistake 1-0. GX kept pressing with a few close shots then a high hanging corner from the right found Parus again for his brace 2-0. Soon after it was Parus who threaded a deft ball through the Raiders defence to free Ollie on the left who powered a great shot past the Acorn goalie 3-0. Given the ground conditions and prevailing wind the crowd thought we would have to be 3-0 up at half time to be safe – but approaching half time Ollie made a scything run down the left flank, cut back and launched a high cross into the box which found Tom H who acrobatically found the back of the net with his left foot 4-0.
Coming out in the second half GX had the wind in their faces and were running uphill – would 4 be enough? Yes definitely as after 5 minutes of average play and a very messy goal square squabble over the ball, Tom H found the net with a good low drive from 20 yards 5-0. Moments later another strong run by Ollie down the right was rewarded when he cut inside and found Knibbo who poked it home past the hapless Acorn goalie 6-0. It was looking like a good win, but the boys were not finished yet. Minutes later Ollie ran at the defence again, jinked, rolled the ball left and then let loose a cannon ball into the left corner of the net 7-0. By now the holes were there to be found and GX did well to put Parus through on the goalie in time for him to roll it into the net 8-0. Was that enough? – no, there was one more after a good touch on from Knibbo and Parus was free on the left and made no mistake thrashing the ball through the Raiders goalie from 25 yards out 9-0.
A great game from Parus with 4 goals and some neat assists; Ollie was everywhere bagging 2 and setting up 3 others, Tom H was clinical for 2 and played his best game of the season, Knibbo with 1 goal and 2 assists. The mid-field and backs were solid, composed and rarely troubled while Steve played with calm maturity in goal bringing off three great saves and giving those in front of him great confidence. Now for Prestwood.
